Paris Attacks: Why Do They Resonate So Personally?

The entire developed world seems to be rallying behind the people of Paris in the wake of the terrorist attacks there which cost the lives of more than 120 mainly young people.

The tricolor has been shown in many forms around the world as a sign of solidarity with Parisians. 

Why do these particular attacks seem to have resonated so deeply with so many people? Why do they give so many people pause for thought?
